Providence by Confluence Films

Since we are getting close to winter, it is that time when the fly-fishing movies, fundraisers and winter gatherings start to take place. The kickoff of the season was Providence by Confluence Films, chronicling their expedition back down to the Indian Ocean and atoll of Providence, after it was closed to all tourism and live aboard vessels for 6 years or so due to piracy.

A three day voyage to the fishing grounds from Mehe' , and then ten splendid days of catching fish many of us would and probably will never hear of or see unless on films or magazines.
The setting was magnificent as one could imagine, as they were the only ones out in the entire atoll fishing for GT's, barracudas, groupers, shark, trivially, and many other species of fish.

The movie was fantastic, and since we will be fishing with Jim Klug the producer of the movie in a week or so, it will be very interesting to discuss a couple of items of the movie.

Here is a short trailer for the movie, check it out, also get out and see it, what else you got to do..

The Tri-Divide Cutthroat Ride- the Provo Bros.

Known mainly for the insane skiing and snowboarding video shorts, Ian and Neil also do
a pretty mean job of putting together a story line and shooting some nice footage in some
nice locals. This one caught my eye because , well cutthroats are near and dear to my heart.

Tri-Divide captures their quest to catch three different species of cutthroat in the Utah
area, mixing the love of high altitude, fat-tire biking, camping and fly-fishing. Pour a cup of java,
and enjoy this nice little film.

Thin Mint by Greg Garcia

Not the cookies, but they too are my favorite. The Thin Mint is a sleeper of a small streamer
pattern and should definitely be in everyones streamer box, probably heaping over. Usually a very thin tie, this is a great fly to trail behind your larger water moving creations. But because of the simplicity of the fly, it skates in an out of the rocks and shallows very nicely.

Again, watch as my good buddy Greg Garcia show how to tie this fine recipe.

Big Ditch, Beautiful Colors

Wanting to see the fall colors in another area of the state, we decided to load our only remaining
boat and head over to the big irrigation ditch on the west slope. Hearing the fish were chasing moderate sizes streamers from solid sources would have us amped up and ready to pound the rip rap banks. The forecast was not the best as the WeatherUnderground would call for sunny, warm beautiful weather for the weekend ........ Crap

Getting on the road at the crack of early would put us on the river, while we still had plenty of shadows and sunless banks, just what we wanted. The morning would be frosty and cool, starting off in the low 20's, but warming quickly.
It did not take long for the fish to start keying in on the hearty, flashy meals that would be darting
in front of them. Normally the fish hold tight to the bank, this day would be slightly different with the fish taking the streamers 10-15 ft. from the band. they made you strip it all the way to the boat, just did not not know when they would hit.
The Coffee Sparkle Minnow, followed by a small olive bugger would prove to take many fish. You also can never discount the the Dirty Hippy, always a crowd favorite.
