Friend of Floatfisher

Gained a new friend while fishing. A little big and doesn't not fit in the boat very well, but very
cool to be around to furry creatures.

Too Busy Fishing

I guess I had better get busy and get a couple of posts in, i have been too busy fishing this summer,
which is a good thing. Hopefully you have all been out too. With all the ample water around, there have been too many choices, so Mary and I have been very busy fishing a variety of water.

Sandwiched in between was a little work trip and goof off trip to Alaska, to fish for rainbows, sockeyes and silvers. It is always a great time, especially when you your are treated to a trip on private jet. It makes the trip that much more enjoyable.

Now packing for our next trip back up to Alaska in September to find some large rainbows, char, dollies and silver, certainly can't wait.

Been Awhile

Need to be out fishing, it is crazy good on all the Colorado
streams and rivers. Most are all are coming into prime shape with fantastic
bug hatches, eager and willing fish. Know how to row before putting your boat
on the water, as there are still many obstacles out there, and high water in many area's.

Trout Season - The Misfit Saviors

Check out this great film on our good friend Bryan Gregson, they could not have done a feature
on a nicer guy. This is definitely worth your time. Sit back and enjoy.

Returning to his roots in the Rockies, Bryan Gregson mastered photography & cinematography in the winter action sports industry under the tutelage of some of the top mountain shooters. After a series of injuries, and with unique help of the Henry’s Fork community, he then turned the lens to capturing fly fishing and adventure around the globe. This is the story of Bryan’s journey and the cast of misfit saviors that helped to keep the dream alive.

View from the Casting Platform

The beautiful view this morning while standing on the casting deck of the drift boat.
while scanning for tailing carp. The morning cloud cover and fog layer made for difficult conditions,
but will never complain about a morning on the lake with views like this.

And It Begins this Week

Colorado, Wyoming and a few other small spots are in for some hellacious runoff
now that the daytime and night time temperatures have finally started to warm-up. I know in our neck of the woods, the rivers have picked up substantial CFS just in 3 days. Let the flushing begin.

Carpe Diem

The passion, the insanity by some to pursue this crazy fish.  The urban jungle is alive and well even in downtown LA. Worth a watch, as it has won many nice awards.
Check it out.

Warm Weekend has them Rising

Our nice warm, windy weekend got things rolling on some of the Colorado waterways, hopefully the
cooler weather coming in at the start of the week will slow the roll to allow a week a couple more weeks of fishing, before we have to all resort to the lake for the next few months.

Arkansas River- Today at 736 CFS, but dropping bit.

Colorado River at Glenwood- Today at 6230 CFS - steady

Rio Grande - Del Norte - Today 2800 and dropping, probably short lived.

It will be nice that our watersheds will all have water this year, and get a good flushing of all the silt and debris to clean them up. Stay safe out there around them.

Back in the Saddle

Hard to stay up with things now that it is work and fishing season again. Guess my priority to the
intranet is waning a bit and I need to get better. A quick trip to visit our beloved Missouri River over the Easter holiday did not leave us disappointed, but did remind us that winter never leaves Montana till mid to late May.
Low elevation snow pack, was adding additional water to most of rivers in western Montana currently, and the Missouri was not spared, normally, it would run 4000 to 6000 cfs , for our trip it would be pushing 11k, but that would be alright, as the Missouri can handle it and there are plenty of fish to spread out. You just have to know where to go find them in this higher water.
Luckily we know the right people to keep us in the know.

It did take throwing a little bit of all the arsenal at them at times, but well worth the trip.

Sparkle Sunday

Mornings always start out great when you star tossing the old Sparkle Minnow. The SM is a solid
Producer on most trout rivers, just got to have tie it on at the on-set. Lot of eats and chases in low light this morning. Get out and toss a few.

Bows and Browns

Fish moving into the shallows and eating bwo’s and caddis pupa’s. As the water warms
In the morning. Some rising fish , but very sporadic. Still a wonderful day to be on the ditch.

Almost there Baetis

Bucky McCormick from Blue Ribbon Flies ties a very nice and very simplistic blue wing olive
pattern, I think you need to give this one a try and spin up a few.

Ushering Out March

The end of March brought cold wind but cloudy blue sky’s, the fish
would be sparadically eating streamers and nymphs down the river.
Although not fast and furious, always a nice day on the ditch with Mary.

Dreaming of Warm and Skinny Water

Although today is a relatively nice day in comparison, I always dream of chasing fish in skinny water.
There is something about watching your fish feed face down in meer inches of water that get your heart pumping. At times the excitement comes when fishing these narrow channels, often smaller than most trout streams and rivers getting the brute red bulls to tear off and create a mess.
Boo Yeah.....

Safety First

With the "bomb cyclone" interrupting this weeks activities and this weekends fishing.  We had on shopping activity that need attention, new PFD's, throw ropes for the drift boat and new first aid kits for both boats. Safety always has to be first when out on the water. This will be a big year of high water in most all states, you not only need to be prepared for yourself, but many times others around you are not.
Be safe out there this year.

Friday Fly Tying with Greg

Time to get the last few flies in the box before the season gets started in earnest. Although
winter is still around, water is looking really good, and the reports are good from all around.
Time to get the boat and gear ready.

In today's Friday fly tying theater, Greg ties up a Greg Blessing pattern. The Purple Haze
soft hackle. I saw Greg tie this a few months ago at a tying demo, and it is a gem. Since them I have a
row of them in my box.

Check them out, twist a few up.

Filling Empty Spots

Just a few spots to go, and all the winter chores are done. All the nymphs, jigs, drys and streamers have been tied, re-sorted and placed in new boxes for the new season. I am pretty pleased with the new arrangement for the coming season as it will make it easy moving back and forth from the drift boat and raft, as well as any walk wading.

Bring on the season.

Purple Darth Baetis- Greg Garcia

I know when Greg posted his original Darth Baetis pattern I had to post it, Greg's patterns are money in the bank. Although , just a variation, the new purple version that will be coming out and added to Umpqua's catalog this year, will be another barn-burner. Greg only does things one way, first class.
Get in and purchase some or add a few rows of these to your box.

Thanks for adding this new video for us Greg...

Big Bird PMD - Quick Tie

Check out the great video short from Bob Streb of Colorado Angling Company. A master on
in the Vail valley at the Colorado River. Although I have not gotten the opportunity to fish with Bob
yet I have many of great stories and met many folks that have been in his boat. I am typically in the boat with owner Joe Morcomber. If your looking for some great guides on the Eagle or Colorado, give them a holler, they will hook you up on some water you typically don't fish.

Sorry for getting side tracked, check out Bob's PMD.
