First on Fiberglass- Our day on the Ditch

Finally the water on the lower river was clear enough to fish after many weeks of heavy rains, and crap running down the river. Wow, what havoc these rains have caused to the river and fish on the lower
sections, sustained weeks of heavy mud and silt took its toll as the fish had a tough time feeding, thus they are a little behind in weight gain. Usually they are plump and meaty for this time of year.

They were on the feed and eating everything presented slow and drag free, as the water has dropped to
the normal late summer and mid-fall CFS range, which is perfect for both wade fisherman and floaters.
With the drop in flows and clear conditions, we figured it was again time to float one of favorite lower sections. Rarely floated by locals and guides as the shuttles are too long, this creates a float that has no
other boaters on it, and lots of rising fish.  It also presented the opportunity to fish or NEW favorite little
rod, Scott 703-3- Fiberglass rod. Perfect for the fly fare we would be throwing today, single dry.
Although, most would think this would be to short to throw out of a boat, it has surprising backbone, and capability to throw some line.
Perfect for casting the royal PMX, Amy's Ant and the Purple Haze which are produced many fish
for Ms. Floatfisher and I. Rises were soft and lazy as they typically are in the late summer, perfect
for this rod. Fish on, Fish off.

Till next week

Are you Lookin'

Are you looking' for good used cow or livestock. Well then, pull up your boots, snap you shirt buttons, and put your lid on and get on down to Mentzer's Used Cow Lot.
These are just some of the great sights you see when you get out and float the different rivers of the west. You will find Metzer's just outside of Missoula on the banks of the Clarksfork.

Upper Clarksfork, MT

Couple of left over photo's from our trip to Montana. One of the rivers we had the chance
to float and add to our list was the Clarksfork. Another great little stretch of water that provided excellent riffles and run, and smattering of fish. A real nice piece of water to float, as we had the river to
ourselves.
Found a couple of great spots to get out of the boat and cast to some rising fish in some back channels.
Ms. Floatfisher working over some of the locals.
Intent on catching the last one out of the run, Mary will just not give up.
Did I say she schooled me the whole entire trip. Not schooled, it was an ass-whoopin..

HAY, You

As many of you are witnessing, it is haying season out there, some are on the first cutting, heading and try to get one more before the cool mornings and frost of early winter set in. I think the hay fields of
Colorado, Wyoming and Montana are pretty cool. The big rolls, bales and stacks are beautiful and a nice pallet for the photographer.

Step Back in Time

Ms. Floatfisher and I had the privilege to spend a couple of days fishing with one
of the pioneers of flyfishing, Jack Dennis. Jack was nice enough to show us some
of his old haunts and favorite waters of past and present. Although they have changed
a little of the years, with the boom of gas and oil, the vastness of Wyoming is something to
only marvel at.
With a scant population of people dwarfed only by antelope, deer, moose and many other animals, the fish were plentiful. With the fantastic snow pack of last winter, rivers are still flowing nicely and fish were willing participants to the foam flies.
It seemed around each bend of the rivers Jack was showing us, moose were everywhere. This was certainly a great sight for Ms. Floatfisher and I as this is not a common sight in Colorado. You can believe the camera shutter was fluttering. The intimate size of the streams also made the fishing exciting and extremely peaceful. As I can recall, we only saw 2-3 boats between the 3 sections of river.

Jack sharing some flyfishing stories of the past, there were many.
Mary giving the morning first fish good luck smack down. No better way to break the ice of the boat with a healthy Wyoming brown that succumb to a black Power's Ant. Mary railed many on this pattern the rest of the day.
Running on of the many irrigation drops on the river.
Like any good fishing town, there are no shortages of water holes after the hard work is done.
Time to belly up.

Mini Hot by Anglers All

Mini Hot from Anglers All on Vimeo.
Check out the tying series by our good friends at Anglers All. My good friend, angling wizard and fly tying guru Greg Garcia shows us how his famed Mini Hot is tied. If you do not tie or carry these patterns in your fly box, you are missing out on a very special pattern. As Greg explains, you can tie it in variety of colors that are very productive.
Twist some of these up, you will not be disappointed.
Thanks for sharing Greg.

Weekend on the Ditch # 22

Wow, what a great 5 week stretch Ms. Floatfisher and I have had. This past weekend we had the pleasure to float another couple of rivers that are truly spectacular and did not disappoint, although,
by fish count standards, not rivers the hoards of folks flock to, but it makes up in size, beauty and scenery. What a great way to spend a pre-anniversary celebration, almost year 14 of wedded fishing bliss.
In some places the rivers is two time the size of the boat and casting must be extremely ahead of the boat , as not to spoke the fish. In addition a boat with low clearance and no draft is a must, as low bridges and shallow water will be the norm for the day. You must make sure you duck, or you will have a splitting headache.
It seems fishing with the moose is a common theme as of late. Certainly a beautiful site along the river, but a little unnerving a close distances as we have had. The creek is pretty small and they will cover this distance very quickly if we are in there way.
One of the prizes of the "creekin" in the skiff down the river. Pretty nice when they sip at #16 brown ant!
